For most UK online sellers, the next seven weeks decide the year. Black Friday opens the floodgates on Friday 27 November, the orders keep coming through December, and by the time the last posting dates arrive you will have packed more parcels in a month than in the previous quarter.
What separates a smooth peak season from a stressful one is rarely the product or the discount. It is the boring stuff: do you have enough boxes in the right sizes, do they arrive when you need them, do they protect what is inside, and can your packing table keep up when orders triple?
This guide gives you a phase-by-phase packaging checklist from Black Friday to Christmas, built around the real dates of 2026. You will see exactly what to do before the sale, during the Black Friday weekend, through the December rush, and in the quiet week after Christmas. There is also a master checklist at the end that you can copy straight into your notes.
If you already know you need boxes for December, start your quote now and keep reading while we get to work:

The Key Dates for Peak Season 2026
Before the checklist, here is the calendar. Print this table and stick it next to your packing station.
| Date | What happens | Why it matters for packaging |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 27 November | Black Friday | Your first big order spike |
| Sunday 29 November | Evri extra standard delivery day | Parcels keep moving on Sundays in peak weeks |
| Monday 30 November | Cyber Monday | Second spike, and the day a boxes order approved on Monday 9 November would arrive |
| Sundays 6 and 13 December | Evri extra standard delivery days | More weekend collections to plan around |
| Friday 18 December | Royal Mail 2nd Class last recommended posting date | Last day for the cheapest service |
| Saturday 19 December | Royal Mail Tracked 48 last recommended posting date | Weekend deadline, so most sellers treat Friday as the cut-off |
| Monday 21 December | Royal Mail 1st Class and Tracked 24 last recommended posting date | Last standard next-day option |
| Wednesday 23 December | Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed last recommended posting date | Premium emergency option |
| Friday 25 December | Christmas Day | No deliveries |
| Monday 28 December | Substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day | Carriers such as UPS do not collect or deliver |
Carrier dates are recommendations, not guarantees, and they can change. They come from ShipStation’s UK Christmas 2026 guide, checked on 28 October 2026. Always confirm with your own carrier before you tell customers a cut-off.
Phase 1: Now to Thursday 26 November (Before Black Friday)
This is the planning phase, and it is where most of the work happens. What you do now decides whether the rest of the season is calm or chaotic.
Forecast by packed order, not by product
Do not count how many products you expect to sell. Count how many parcels you expect to send, and what is inside each one. A customer buying one candle needs a different box from a customer buying a three-piece gift set, and discounted bundles on Black Friday will change your average order.
Start with last year’s orders, add your growth and planned promotions, and split the total into:
- Single-item orders
- Gift sets and bundles
- Mixed baskets
- Fragile or premium items that need extra protection
Then match each group to a box size. If you ship in more than three or four sizes, ask yourself whether you can simplify. Fewer sizes mean faster packing and fewer mistakes.
Count what you already have
Walk to the shelf and count it. Write down usable boxes by size, plus the inserts, tissue paper, tape and labels that go with them. Then subtract what you expect to use before any new delivery arrives. If the numbers do not work, you need a top-up order.
Decide: bridge, top-up or full custom
With Black Friday three weeks away, you have three realistic choices depending on how much time you have.
Bridge with what you have. If your boxes will not arrive before 27 November, make your existing packaging feel festive with stickers, branded tissue paper, a thank-you card or a printed insert. It costs little and works immediately, and you can start tomorrow.
Top up with standard boxes. If you simply need more of what you already use, reorder it as early as you can. A reorder on locked artwork is the fastest type of order.
Order custom printed boxes for December. Our lead time is 15 working days including delivery, counted from the day your artwork is approved. If you approve by Monday 9 November, boxes arrive around Monday 30 November. If you approve by Friday 13 November, they arrive around Friday 4 December. That will not catch Black Friday itself, but it catches the long December run when many of your gift orders land.
We covered the full date table in our guide to last order dates for Christmas packaging in the UK, including the formula for working backwards from your own deadline.
Lock your artwork and your offers
A surprising number of delays come from changing wording after the design is approved. Before you sign off anything, confirm:
- The exact discount, dates and any codes you plan to print
- Your logo, colours and the message inside the lid
- Any QR code destination, tested on a phone
- One final approved file, and one person responsible for approving it
If an offer is short-lived, do not print it on more boxes than you will use while it is valid. A neutral festive box plus a removable insert card for the offer is a safer approach.
Do a practice pack
Before orders spike, pack a few real orders exactly as you will in December: one single item, one gift set and one mixed basket. Time yourself. Watch for flaps that will not close, products that slide around, labels that cover your branding, and anything that slows you down. Fixing it now costs nothing. Fixing it in the middle of Cyber Monday costs sales.
Get a Free Quote in MinutesPhase 2: Friday 27 to Monday 30 November (Black Friday Weekend)
This weekend is about speed and accuracy, not new decisions. Your packaging plan should already be locked.
Set up the packing station the night before
Pre-assemble boxes in your top three sizes if they need folding, stage tape, labels and inserts within arm’s reach, and keep spares of everything on a trolley or shelf nearby. A packer who walks to the stockroom every few orders loses an hour a day.
Keep your top sizes stocked
Watch your box counts at the start and end of each day. If a size is running low, you want to know on Saturday morning, not Sunday night. Keep a small buffer of every size, and decide in advance what you will do if a size runs out, such as switching to the next size up with extra void fill.
Protect the promotion
Check that every parcel carries the right insert, the right offer card and the right box for the order. A mismatched discount card creates support tickets that take longer than packing the order did.
Plan for carrier collections
Black Friday weekend means more parcels per collection. Make sure parcels are labelled, bagged or boxed and ready before the driver arrives, and check whether your carrier needs extra notice for larger volumes. Evri has extra standard delivery days on Sundays in peak weeks, which can help if you ship to customers who are home at weekends.
Phase 3: Tuesday 1 to Thursday 17 December (The December Rush)
This is the longest phase and the one that tests your system. Orders are steady, carriers are busy and every day counts.
Switch to your festive boxes
This is when your custom Christmas boxes should be in hand. If you approved artwork by Friday 20 November, your boxes arrive by around Friday 11 December, which is still in time for most of the final-week orders. Start using them as soon as they arrive, and keep your plain boxes as a backup.
If you are still deciding on box styles, our Christmas boxes are a good starting point for fast, festive outer packaging, and our Christmas gift boxes wholesale option helps if you need a larger run at a lower price per box.
Right-size everything
Boxes that are too big waste material, need more void fill and can cost more to post. Boxes that are too small damage products. Measure your product with its protective layers, then choose the smallest box that protects it properly. For online orders, our e-commerce packaging boxes come in practical sizes designed for exactly this.
Protect fragile and premium items
Decorative boxes are not always parcel-ready. A premium gift box may need an outer carton, or at least tissue and corner protection, to arrive looking perfect. If you sell perfume, jewellery or watches, a presentation box inside a sturdy outer box gives you the best of both worlds. For bottles and containers, check your plastic bottle manufacturer UK supplier’s dimensions before choosing a box size.
Make the unboxing worth sharing
December customers are buying gifts, and gifts get photographed. You do not need expensive finishes everywhere. Focus on a clean opening, branded tissue, a short thank-you note and one useful reason to buy again. Our guide to Christmas packaging ideas for e-commerce brands has 15 ideas you can adapt in a weekend.
Review your stock every Monday
Set a weekly reminder to count boxes, inserts and tape. If your sales are running ahead of forecast, you need to know by the first week of December, because a new order placed after that point may not arrive before your final posting dates.
Phase 4: Friday 18 to Wednesday 23 December (Last Posting Days)
The final week is a different job from the rest of the season. You are not selling any more. You are making sure every order that is already in gets out the door on time.
Know which service each customer chose
Each carrier service has its own cut-off, and they are not the same:
- Friday 18 December: Royal Mail 2nd Class
- Saturday 19 December: Royal Mail Tracked 48
- Monday 21 December: Royal Mail 1st Class and Tracked 24
- Wednesday 23 December: Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed
Switch off each service on your website at its own cut-off, and show the date clearly at checkout. Customers are far more forgiving of a clear cut-off than a missed delivery.
Allow extra time for remote addresses
Parcels going to remote postcodes, islands and international destinations need to go earlier than the dates above. If you ship abroad, check your carrier’s country-by-country dates, because many fall a week or more before the UK ones.
Pack the final orders the day before
If your last posting day is Friday 18 December, aim to have every order packed and labelled by Thursday evening. That leaves Friday for collections and any surprises.
Do not start a new packaging project now
If you do not have boxes by around 14 December, it is too late to order custom ones for this Christmas. Use what you have, add a festive sticker or tissue paper, and plan next year’s packaging in January.
Phase 5: Boxing Day to January (The Reset)
Your packaging work is not over when the last parcel leaves. The week after Christmas is the best time to set up next year.
Plan for returns
Returns climb after Christmas as gifts are swapped and sizes do not fit. If your outer box can be reused for a return, you save the customer a box and yourself a support ticket. Keep a small stock of spare packaging for repacks and replacements.
Reorder before January sales
If your boxes ran low in December, reorder now. January is a quieter time for production, which is a good moment to approve artwork without a deadline hanging over you.
Keep your designs reusable
If your festive boxes carry a date or an offer, leftover stock is useless on 1 January. Use an undated winter or festive design, and put short-lived offers on removable insert cards instead. Unused boxes then become useful stock instead of waste.
Write down what worked
While it is fresh, record which box sizes ran out first, which ones you had too many of, how long packing took, and which problems repeated. Save your final box specifications and artwork. Next year’s order will take a fraction of the time.

How Many Boxes Should You Order?
Running out of boxes in the middle of December is worse than ordering a little late. A good rule of thumb is to order 15 to 20% more than your forecast to cover damaged boxes, packing mistakes and unexpected demand.
- Look at last year’s orders between Black Friday and 20 December.
- Add the growth you expect from ads, promotions and new products.
- Add the 15 to 20% buffer on top.
For example, if you expect 400 orders, plan for around 460 to 480 boxes.
Pricing works in your favour here. The higher the quantity, the lower the price per box, starting from £0.50 per box on a 500-piece order. If you only need a small run, or even a single box, we can do it, but the rate per box will be higher. Often the next quantity up costs less per box and gives you the safety buffer in the same order.
Which Box Fits Which Job?
Use this table to match your products to a box type.
| If you sell | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General online orders | E-commerce packaging boxes | Practical sizes and strong protection |
| Gifts for customers | Branded gift boxes | Looks like a present straight from the parcel |
| Names and messages | Personalised gift boxes | Personal touches make Christmas orders memorable |
| Premium or high-value items | Presentation boxes | Builds perceived value and a keepsake reveal |
| Treats, hampers and bakery | Food boxes | Made for food, so freshness and presentation both work |
| A completely unique size | Bespoke boxes UK | Best when you have more time to plan |
If you also want to print small extras such as insert cards or thank-you notes, check the sizes first. Our guide to the standard business card size in the UK takes two minutes and avoids a reprint.
Common Peak Season Packaging Mistakes
Forecasting products instead of parcels. What matters is how many boxes of each size you will use, not how many items you will sell.
Ordering too late. Fifteen working days is three weeks, and every day you wait to approve artwork moves your delivery date back.
Changing the offer after approval. Wording changes cause reprints. Lock your discount before you sign off.
Forgetting packing time. Boxes that arrive on your busiest day are no help. Allow at least a few working days to prepare.
Using too many box sizes. Every extra size slows your packers and creates mistakes. Simplify where you can.
Ignoring protection for decorative boxes. A beautiful box that arrives crushed is worse than a plain one that arrives perfect.
Skipping the practice pack. Ten minutes of testing before the rush saves hours during it.
Printing dates on all your boxes. Leftover boxes with an expired date are wasted money in January.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do before Black Friday to get my packaging ready?
Forecast the number of parcels by size, count your current stock, lock your artwork and offers, and do a practice pack of typical orders. If your custom boxes will not arrive before Black Friday, bridge with festive stickers, tissue paper or an insert card.
Can I still order custom boxes for Black Friday?
Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026. With our 15 working day lead time, artwork would have needed approval by Thursday 5 November to arrive by Thursday 26 November. If you are past that date, tell us your deadline when you request a quote and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
When is the last date to order custom boxes for Christmas?
Approve your artwork by Friday 20 November for boxes to arrive by around Friday 11 December, which leaves time to pack before most last posting dates. Approving by Wednesday 2 December still gets boxes to you by Wednesday 23 December, but that is an emergency date only.
How many boxes should I order for peak season?
Order 15 to 20% more than your forecast to cover damage, mistakes and unexpected demand. For example, if you expect 400 orders, plan for around 460 to 480 boxes.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
There is no strict MOQ with us. You can order the quantity you actually need. Keep in mind that the more you order, the lower the price per box, and very small quantities will have a higher rate per box.
How much do custom boxes cost?
Pricing starts from £0.50 per box on a 500-piece order. The final price depends on box size, material and print, and the price per box drops as the quantity goes up. Design and delivery are free.
What are the last Royal Mail posting dates for Christmas 2026?
Royal Mail’s recommended last posting dates for UK Christmas delivery are Friday 18 December for 2nd Class, Saturday 19 December for Tracked 48, Monday 21 December for 1st Class and Tracked 24, and Wednesday 23 December for Special Delivery Guaranteed. These are recommendations, so always check Royal Mail before relying on them.
Do you offer free design and free delivery?
Yes. Both design and delivery are free, so there are no hidden costs when you receive your quote.
How does payment work?
You pay 50% upfront to begin production. Once your order is ready and you are happy with it, you approve it, pay the remaining 50% and we deliver it to you. If any change is needed that does not follow what you approved, we fix it at no cost.
Final Thoughts: Plan the Rush Before It Plans You
Peak season rewards the prepared. You do not need the fanciest box or the biggest budget. You need the right sizes in stock, boxes that arrive when your team needs them, offers that are locked before print, and a packing table that is ready for volume.
Work through the phases in this guide, copy the master checklist, and start with the one action that cannot wait: deciding what you need for December. Add free design, free delivery, no strict MOQ and pricing from £0.50 per box, and the only thing left to do is start.
